Alex Outhred: Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Alex OuthredAfter a record win of $500,000.00 in last night’s game show, ‘Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?‘, and by not winning the top prize of one million dollars, Alex Outhred, a professional game show competitor, who is also a poker professional and instructor at the World Series of Poker Academy, had to announce to the TV audience that he is not ‘Smarter than a 5th Grader’. But anyone who watched the TV show last night knows that he indeed is ‘Smarter than a 5th Grader’.

The problem that I’ve had with this show in the past was the contestants. They mostly appeared to be picked for the show because of their lack of intelligence. So last night’s show was a refreshing change, as we got to witness someone who was actually very intelligent.

Alex Outhred won the 500K by rationalizing each question, calculating his odds as to speak, to come up with either the correct answer, or getting help from his young classmates.

Before it came to the final question for the grand prize of one million dollars, Alex Outhred had to either take his 500K or proceed with the final million dollar question. If he had gone with the final question there was no backing away from it. Once read, he would have to answer the question, which would have paid him one million for getting it correct, or had he answered wrong, he would have received his guaranteed prize of $25,000.

When Jeff Foxworthy asked Alex Outhred if he wanted to go with the last question, Alex Outhred declined and took the record winning $500,000!

For fun, Jeff Foxworthy asked the final question, it was a US History question, of which is Alex Outhred’s favorite subject. The question was, “Who was the first American Secretary of the Treasury?”. Alex Outhred instantly replied the correct answer, ‘Alexander Hamilton’. Too bad he didn’t “gamble” with that last question. But taking home a half million dollars is pretty good in my books and he and his fiancé looked pretty happy about the accomplishment.

Borrowed Money
Buckshot was a compulsive gambler, and would bet on anything and everything; horses, dogs, football, baseball, basketball, snooker and even soccer games. When Buckshot was down to his last dollar, he went to his best friend and said Jim, I need 1000 dollars, we have no food, I owe rent, the kids need jeans for school, and the wife will not leave the house because we have bad checks at all the stores. Can you help me out?

So his best buddy gave him 2000 dollars to get him ahead, but on one condition, that he does not use the money for gambling. Buckshots reply was Oh, I have money put away for that.

Playing Poker with Dog
Judith walked into her living room and saw her brother playing Poker with their dog. “Amazing!” she sputtered. “This must be the smartest dog in the history of the world!” “He’s not so smart,” her brother mumbled. “I’ve beaten him three out of five games so far.”

Tarot Card Poker
I was playing poker with tarot cards the other night. I got a full house and four people died.

4 for Poker
A doctor answers his phone and hears the familiar voice of a colleague on the other end of the line.
We need a fourth for poker, said the friend.
I will be right over, whispered the doctor.
As he was putting on his coat, his wife asked, Is it serious?
Oh yes, quite serious, said the doctor gravely. In fact, there are three doctors there already!

Pizza Poker
Q: What’s the difference between a professional poker player and a large pepperoni pizza?

Mark Junell’s Poker Table Plans

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I came across Mark Junell’s free poker table design plans a while back ago and figured it should be mentioned here. It’s an absolute gorgeous design and would really impress your poker pals.

Many of us host private home tournaments, so why not have a beautiful poker table when we do? The trend these days is to buy those cheap, unstable folding poker tables for a couple of hundred bucks or less. You could easily build Mark Junell’s table for under $150.00 and end up with a custom table a whole lot nicer than those cheap store bought ones.

Of course, you would need to build it, and hopefully you have some carpentry skills to make it all happen! If you lack some carpentry skills, don’t worry, Mark provides easy, step-by-step instructions with pictures.

My friend made two of these tables and they look, feel, and play great!

So if you ever want to try and build your own poker table, then I highly recommend that you head over to Mark Junell’s site for complete instructions on how to build this awesome poker table.

Be sure to email Mark Junell pictures of your completed poker table as he would love to see them.

Greg Raymer’s PokerStars Account Hacked

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

Greg Raymer - 2004 WSOP Champ! After repeatedly trying numerous different passwords, a persistent password hacker was able to login into Greg “Fossilman” Raymer’s PokerStars account.

Once this hacker had access to Greg Raymer’s PokerStars bankroll, the hacker quickly opened multiple heads-up, sit and go tables and started chip dumping Greg Raymer’s money into a relatively new PokerStars account by the name of “Ikeyrson“.

Greg Raymer is a very popular player on PokerStars and whenever he sits down to play, there are always Railbirds watching him. These Railbirds found Greg Raymer’s play suspicious and quickly informed PokerStars Support about the activity.

PokerStars quickly notified Greg Raymer and suspended both accounts before any money could be transferred to a third party account.

Greg Raymer even admitted that his password was not as good as it should have been. Let’s all take that as a lesson, make your password strong.

Crazy Pineapple at Paradise Poker

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Crazy Pineapple is gaining popularity quickly as more Texas Hold’em players are looking for more action. Although Texas Hold’em is still the game of choice for most online poker players; Crazy Pineapple offers almost the same game, but entices much more action.

Playing Texas Hold’em smartly requires the player to fold many hands pre-Flop. Some professional poker players even fold up to 90%+ of the cards dealt to them when playing Texas Hold’em. This requires a lot of patience and can induce boredom for some.

This is where Crazy Pineapple can help make things more interesting. Crazy Pineapple is identical to Texas Hold’em but with a twist. You are dealt three cards instead of two and you must fold one of the three cards dealt to you after the Flop. Crazy Pineapple will encourage players to see many more Flops compared to Texas Hold’em, which in turn will create much more action and bigger pots.

Extra strategy is involved in playing Crazy Pineapple. For example, you must sometimes decide whether to discard your current “best hand” after the flop in order to potentially draw to an even better hand such as a flush or a straight.

So if you want to try something different and that offers more action than Hold’em, then I recommend you try playing Crazy Pineapple at Paradise Poker.

It won’t be too long before we see more online poker rooms offering Crazy Pineapple. For now though, I recommend playing Crazy Pineapple at ParadisePoker.

Playing different poker games not only keeps poker interesting, but also expands your knowledge of poker which will make you an overall better poker player. Who knows, maybe Crazy Pineapple will be your best and most profitable poker game.

Sorry, Americans are not able to play real-money at Paradise PokerClick here to check out Crazy Pineapple at Paradise Poker (100% First Purchase Bonus).

Donkey Catches on River

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Once in a rare while I will rant about a bad beat, here is the first.

I’m in a $5.50 single table sit and go on PokerStars.

First hand I am dealt 1010 under the Gun, I raise three times the Big Blind.

Everyone folds except one guy re-raises from late position, I call.

The Flop: 9s 7h 2c

I bet half the pot, about $80, he then re-raises to $600.

My initial feeling; oversized bet = nothing.

I re-raise him all-in.

He calls.

He shows Q3off.

I’m thinking what a Donk play and can’t believe he called.

Double up?

He catches Q on the River.

I’m first one out.
