PartyPoker just renewed a sponsorship deal with Harrah’s for the 2007 World Series of Poker. Who said that the UIGEA would kill online poker rooms from being present at the 2007 World Series of Poker (WSOP)?

As part of the agreement, PartyPoker will use their brand PartyPoker.net, their play money site and not their real money site which is partypoker.com. By using their play money site PartyPoker is able to skirt the new online gaming laws passed by the US last year.

There are a number of changes to this year’s *World Series of Poker (*WSOP), and one of them is how much the players will be paid when they get into the money.

The problem in the past *WSOP events came from players who would play for days, just to get into the money, and for their rewards they got paid little. This year they are going to change things up by paying the bottom finishers more money and the top finishers less.

“We discussed this concept with our poker operations team and with members of the WSOP Players Advisory Council and the consensus was that spreading the wealth is the right thing to do,” said Howard Greenbaum, regional vice president of specialty gaming for Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc.”

“The new schedules are designed to increase the rewards to players who finish in the money but don’t reach the final table.”

He added, “Our goal is to keep more money circulating among more people in the poker community.”

“Overall, 846 players last year would have won substantially more money, in some case more than double what they collected in 2006.”

A comparison of the actual payouts for the 2006 Texas Hold’em Main Event with what they would have been under the new payout format:

“The 2006 Main Event would have paid $22,266 for 873rd through 775th places, up from $14,605 or $15,512. Places 82 through 73 would have paid $126,173, up from $66,010. First place would have paid $10,028,715, down from $12 million, while second place would have been worth $5,442,769, compared with $6,105,900.”

I personally think this is a great move by the *World Series of Poker. With all the new changes this year I think we are going to see the best tournament structure to date.

JB_Dog was just an average low-stakes player on PokerStars who’s been playing online poker for a long time now. He earned his Sunday Million seat through an $8.00 re-buy satellite tournament.
